To ban importation of Russian electric energy Respective petition has appeared on the President’s website. In the last four years, Ukraine has not bought a single Kremlin’s kilowatt. It has been banned to buy it under bilateral contracts. Vira Sverdlyk was trying to find out what has changed and most importantly who changed the status quo. To ban the Russian electric energy import that has become possible thanks to MP Andrii Herus. Respective petition has appeared on the official website of the President. Energy expert Oleksandr Trokhymets is the author of the petition. As a lawyer I believe that the Herus’ remark has been introduced in violation of not only the regulations, but also the agreements Ukraine has been standing by in the Ukraine – EU agreement. Chair of the relevant parliamentary committee, Andrii Herus, introduced the remark almost late at night. It was introduced to the bill on use of nuclear energy. Suddenly, at night, before the consideration of the second reading of the bill at the session hall, Mr. Herus introduced the amendment with which he lobbied the procurement of cheaper electric energy from the Russian Federation by a company belonging to Ihor Kolomoiskyi. The United Energy company has bought the first 100 MW from Russia. It belongs to the Privat Group, states the YouControl online legal entities portal of Ukraine. Herus himself denies that the money of the Privat-owned enterprise was paid to the aggressor country. Bilateral contracts do not work. No one could agree even technically. At the same time, Ukrenergo confirmed that the Russian electric energy was really being imported under bilateral agreements. Cooperation with the countries that are not part of the European Energy Community has been resumed. The President of Belarus also confirms that. Serious prerequisites for mutually beneficial cooperation are being created by the opening of the Ukrainian electric energy market. We have already completed a number of commercial contracts on it delivery to Ukraine. After the launch of the Belarusian NPP in 2020, we will be interested in Ukrainian nuclear sector’s experience. The Russian Federation is building the Astravets nuclear power plant in Belarus. It will be commissioned next year. Russia has tried to find sales markets in Poland and Lithuania. Lithuania has adopted a law saying that the Astravets NPP constitutes a threat to its national security. The Poles rejected the offer as well. And here we are. Where is the logic at all? That is a threat to energy and national security. Experts have nicknamed the idea to buy Russian product as energy capitulation. They consider interference of the President to be the only solution. The petition signers demand consideration at the Verkhovna Rada of an urgent bill that will ban commercial importation of electric energy from Russia. It is too dangerous to provide Kremlin with the energy lever. Vira Sverdlyk, Oleksandr Davydenko. Segodnya, TV Channel Ukraine.
