Ed Church- After Fossil Fuels, Then What? (Summer 2019)

Hi, I’m Ed Church, and I’m very pleased to
be offering my first course through OLLI. It’s going to be called After Fossil
Fuels, What’s Next? So, climate change is something that’s on everybody’s mind,
from the mounting effects of global warming, whether it’s extreme weather,
heat waves, sea level rise, all the trauma that climate change is affecting.
Governments and businesses across the world are taking action, and the action
that they are taking follows the first rule of holes which is, when you’re in
one, stop digging. And what has created this hole for us is fossil fuels. So
we’re going to have to stop using fossil fuels, but fossil fuels are the basis of
our economy and our society, or how we get our transportation, whether it’s cargo
ships, or airlines, or cars, whatever it is, it’s how we get our manufacturing, it’s how
we raise our crops, how we raise our food, how we make our our clothes. So when we
stop using fossil fuels, this is going to have a big impact on our economy and our
society. I’m not a climate scientist, I’m a sociologist, so I look at the effects
that not using fossil fuels are going to have on us collectively and individually.
So in this class, we’re going to be using all of the latest information from a
variety of sources, whether it’s climate science science or economics or business
or agronomy, botany, we’re going to be looking at all those sources, and we’re
going to be talking about the changes that will come, in the clothes we’re
going to be able to wear, the food we’re going to eat, how we’re going to
get around, and we’re going to look at cities, we’re going to look at the
greenhouse gas production of cities, for example. So, we’re going to look at a wide
variety of sources and potential answers for how we can deal with climate change,
and how we can move into what’s called the post carbon society, that’s a society
after we stop using fossil fuels. One of the reasons I’m excited to to teach
to the the OLLI members is that OLLI members remember a world
when we didn’t have climate change, a world decades ago, when things were
quite different. So I’m hoping that the OLLI membership can collectively help me
to think through creatively, and use your imagination as to what we’re going to be
able to do in the post-carbon society, and how we’re going to be able to smooth
the transition for our children and our grandchildren. I think there’s a big role
for our generation in that effort. So I’m looking forward very much to seeing you
all in June, I hope you’ll sign up for the class. Thanks.
