Time now for a look through the global headlines
we′re following this Monday morning. For that, we′ll turn to Eunice Kim, standing
by at the NewsCenter. Good morning, Eunice. Good morning, Mark. The use of fossil fuels…
must be phased out by the end of the century… if the world is to avoid the catastrophic
effects of climate change. That was the conclusion reached by the Synthesis
Report… published on Sunday by the UN-backed Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change…
capping a week of intense debate between scientists and government officials in Copenhagen, Denmark.
It said time was running out on cutting carbon emissions… adding that the world will face
a rising “likelihood of severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts for people and ecosystems”…
if left unchecked. In its starkest verbiage yet… the report
set targets for world governments… to produce most of its electricity via low-carbon sources
by the year 20-50… and effectively eliminate the use of fossil fuels by the year 21-hundred.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon… calling the report “historic”… urged leaders to
act on the clear message… adding that there is a way out… if governments act decisively.
