Nidal Abu-Zahra designs new system for solar cells


I’m Professor Nidal Abu-Zahra. I’m an Associate Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering department. I’m the Chair also of the Materials Science and Engineering department. In this lab we do polymer synthesis and characterization. We design different polymers for various applications. We have one project where we designed a new system for polymer solar cells. Polymer solar cells are known for their very low efficiency. The goal is to improve the power conversion efficiency of solar energy. We focus on the material, the polymer side of it and change the structure by processes like thermal annealing where we make the structure have better electronic properties so it can harvest the solar energy better. We looked at very common materials that is low cost that’s polyurethane foams and we changed the chemistry of the polymer where it can, in addition to working as a structure material, it can have a chemical function to it where it can absorb lead from drinking water, flowing water and remove it. We made sure that we meet students needs on a personal level and we customize our attention to students in a way that they will be successful when they graduate.
