Surely, it will push through and Elon and and SpaceX are very serious that the schedules they’ve set in going to Mars will be followed. Just this January, many people were surprised with what Elon posted on his Twitter account. He said that Starship, the ship that will bring people and equipment to Mars, is targeting three voyages per day They are also aiming to make 100 Starships per year. So, in ten years, there will already be 1000 Starships that have been built. The journeys to Mars can only happen every 26 months because this is the time when Earth and Mars are closest to each other and it can reduce travel time and fuel usage of Starship. So if we calculate starting from 2024, which is the first trip that will bring people to Mars, up to 2050 which is Elon’s target for having a colony there 2024 until 2050 that is 26 years 26 years are equivalent to 312 months If a trip to Mars can happen only every 26 months, 312 months divided by 26 months equals 12 trips to Mars within 26 years. If there are 1000 Starships times 100 people times 12 trips, there will have been 1.2 million people who have been brought by 1000 Starships in the year 2050. Someone asked Elon how the people who will go to Mars will be chosen. When the important positions have been filled up, will the remaining slots be randomized like in the lottery or will be chosen based on their skills? When can families go to Mars? It is not cost effective to stock up fuel to bring to Mars because it will just occupy the payload or use up the cargo capacity of the Starship. So if there is a manufacturing plant on Mars, that means there have to be workers in the plant. It would be good to talk about how fuel can be manufactured on Mars. The fuel that the Starship will use is liquid methane and liquid oxygen. To create methane and oxygen, water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) must be found on Mars. The atmosphere of Mars is rich in carbon dioxide. In fact, more than 95% of its atmosphere is composed of carbon dioxide. Water is what SpaceX needs to find. Based on studies, frozen water can be found at the north and south poles or underground. Nevertheless, the exact location to find a large enough quantity of water to create fuel must still be found. The hydrogen and oxygen in water can be separated through the process of electrolysis. The energy that will be used for this process can come from solar energy using solar panels. The hydrogen gas from the water will be combined with carbon dioxide through the Sabatier Process or Sabatier Reaction. The result is methane gas and water. The Sabatier Reaction has been tried and tested because it is what astronauts on the International Station or ISS use to create water that they drink. It is extremely useful because the weight and space that water takes up on the spacecraft that brings supplies to the ISS can be used instead for materials that are needed for science experiments. The oxygen gas resulting from electrolysis and the methane gas resulting from the Sabatier process now just need to be converted into liquid to be used as fuel and this can be done through a cryogenic system. This is a system where the gases like oxygen and methane are stored in an extremely low temperature to become liquid. There! The Starship has fuel again and can return to Earth. The focus of Elon Musk and SpaceX right now is to perfect the Starship because it is the key to the success of this mission. If they cannot make the Starship work properly, no mission no mission to Mars is going to happen at all. This is why prototype building and material testing are in full swing. SpaceX’s employees are doubling their efforts and the company even announced that they are accepting new applicants. Last September, Elon presented updates about the Starship. Behind Elon stood a completed prototype of the Starship which was five times taller than SpaceX’s first successful rocket that reached orbit, the Falcon 1. According to calculations from NASA’s contracts, the cost of each seat on the Soyuz to the ISS is around 86 million USD while SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, which is first spacecraft that will bring astronauts to the ISS while the Starship is not yet ready only costs 55 million USD per astronaut. Since the American Space Shuttle retired about a decade ago, the Russian Soyus was the only spacecraft that astronauts used going to the ISS and coming back to Earth. But in May of this year, NASA astronauts, particularly Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, will once again board an American spacecraft, which is the Crew Dragon atop the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. By the way, just so you will not be confused, the Starship Starship is made up of two parts. The Super Heavy rocket is the first stage, or the booster, which is the bottom part and has a height of 68 meters. Aside from the Starship’s reusability, it is also important that it can refuel while in orbit so it can reach farther places in space. The target for testing its flight is this year, 2020! So let’s watch out for it!The plan for the Starship to go to the moon will push through and the first paid passenger is Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, along with some other chosen individuals from the field of art. The Starship is also being designed to carry satellites and other large cargo to space such as telescopes. The Starship will also be able to bring people and cargo to the International Space Station, which is part of the more-than-3-billion-dollar contract of NASA with SpaceX. The Starship will also be used for fast travel to different destinations on Earth, like for example, , the journey from the Philippines to America will take less than one hour. These uses of the Starship is one way for SpaceX to collect funds for all of its expenses. The Starship is also being prepared to go to different planets in our Solar System, like Saturn, and of course Mars, because the main goal of this mission is to build a self-sustaining city on Mars.
