Solar Energy For The Island of Marlon Brando’s Dreams

Tetiaora, an atoll in the heart of the
Pacific. Hollywood legend Marlon Brando fell in love with the atoll while
filming mutiny on the bounty. He purchased it and worked on his vision of
an eco-friendly resort together with a Richard Baily now owner of “The Brando”:
We’re trying to create a new model of sustainable luxury tourism. At “The Brando” we
wanted to try to achieve as much as possible carbon neutrality in our energy
production and so the use of solar energy became very important to our
solution. SMA Sunbelt Energy delivered a complete containerized battery storage
system designed to withstand the tropical outdoor conditions. After an extensive engineering phase SMA Sunbelt is on site to make sure that
each and every connection is well installed, configured and tested. During the day the diesel generators will be switched off automatically and the
battery and PV system will take over the load. One of the biggest challenges was designing and integrating
a power management system to a unique existing solar installation and grid
infrastructure. The operators of the system are well-trained. For complex topics SMA Sunbelt provides remote service support
and can monitor and update the system from anywhere in the world in the
operation phase. The most challenging part of the whole project was to
implement the feature blackstart. One of the challenges of this project was to
design a system which can start the whole island from the battery system. For the customer it was important to
have no grid failures in the day so we did all blackstart test during the night. We could prove our blackstart can start
the grid within about 20 seconds even with the loads connected online. our solar installation is now entirely
meeting our expectations and we are very very pleased with our partnership
with SMA. you
